What a Party! Just finished a week of mixing and mastering Craig Pedersen and Joel Kerr’s new record “It’s a Free Country”. Also tracked Slo Tom and the Handsome Devils new record “I’m Sick” and that will lead to a few overdubs, the regular process, and release is set for October.
Craig and i also wrote 25 new hits for a our Party Band and we’ll be previewing a few at the Manx next week with Don Cummings on organ.
June is all about FRIENDS ON FRIENDS and tracking more on my new solo disc.

Micasa “Gasoline Coast” all mastered up! It was a lot of fun to work with Nicholas Di Gaetano on this fun record.
8 of my newest tracks have drums and bass and some guitars done, so i’m about 7% complete the record, i hope to be at 46% complete by the end of May.
Next up is making the new Slo’ Tom and the Handsome Devils record “i’m sick” and with the return of my brother Steve from tour we’ll be getting FRIENDS ON FRIENDS back into shape for some summer beachboying.

Done round 1 or mixing YASSU BENNEDICT, SLO’ TOM residency at PRESSED every thursday from 9-11pm, started mixing RYAN PURCHASE’s “Morphology of a Lover”, a few one off band recordings (including BIG NEWTON, THE SYNTONES, and JOE BROWNRIGG). Then it’s March, the month of starting my 3rd solo record (tracking in Hudson YN with my great bro Steve Durand and guests) and mixing a CRAIG PEDERSEN ep and the Mi CASA theatre hits we recorded in the last couple months.
Also in the summer my band (STEVE BOUDREAU, PHIL VICTOR BOVA & PHIL SHAW BOVA) did a taping for “CKCU PRESENTS” for Rogers TV, it will air this wee (feb 17) on the Rogers channel.

i have 15 new hits for my next solo CD and production of that should start sooner than later.

Had a great time playing with Rey Sabatin Jr for his last couple shows of 2012, the last one opening for Daniel Romano.
Also had a blast watching my great friend Jeremy Fisher playing his last show of 2012 promoting his latest album “Mint Juleps” that we made together earlier this year.
But there are still more shows to see from me - i’ll be playing guitar and lap steel for SLO’ TOM at his Rock and roll Rodeo at Irene’s on DEC 14th and then on DEC 16th i’ll be doing a solo set opening for Al Tuck at Pressed in Ottawa.
Just started mixing hits for Yassu Benedict from San Francisco, these dudes are pretty cool.
Coming up in this month are some more VULTURE HAMMER recordings as well as some hits with Mi CASA theater co.

Just did some mixes for awesome band “Rah Rah” on behalf of their even cooler record label HIDDEN PONY - what a fun party time that was! If you’re in Hamilton on this weekend check out SUPER CRAWL (free) where Rah Rah and other HIDDEN PONY bands will be playing.
Had a super productive recording last Sunday with Garry Elliot and Steve Boudreau for some of their original jazz tunes, these 2 guys are super champs.
A new collaboration i started this week was with Mi Casa Theatre Co. these turkeys are a lot of fun and have great songs from their play “Live from the Belly of a Whale” which we’re recording for the touring version/potential album.
Phil V Bova, Phil S Bova, Steve, and myself did a pretape for a television project which is a collaboration between ROGERS and CKCU, it should air in the new year.
Up soon are some recording evenings with Ken Workman, Andrea Simms-Karp, VULTURE HAMMER, and some of my original songs.
Off to Toronto, Hamilton, then Chicago. When i get back it’s Slo’ Tom at the O-town Hoedown.

Dear Team,
Just got the Slo’ Tom master of “Must been a Pretty good Night” back from my brother Phil and it’s awesome! Release is on October 20 at Irene’s in Ottawa. Also this week I got my copy of “Rainbow Pony Power” self-titled album, which i recorded and mixed, that release is on September 7 at the Atomic Rooster. Another master i got this week is of a record i recorded and mixed that my pal Cal Cheney made - He’s not sure if he’s going to release it but it’ll probably get up on the web for you to hear.
This weekend I’m playing WAKEFEST First on Friday the 24th with my band (Phil Shaw Bova, Phil Victor Bova, Steve Boudreau and special guest Jeremy Fisher) and again with the same band on saturday backing Shannon Ross (opening for Bruce Peninsula) with some songs of the album “Jackrabbit” we made together.
If you’re in america (or get TV stations from that land) you can hear a mix i did of “goodnight moon” by Said The Whale on a commercial for the Chase credit card company. I hear “it’s being featured during Shark Week” on the Discovery Channel, but i don’t have a TV so i haven’t been ale to confirm that.
Back in the Studio in a couple weeks with Joe Brownrigg and Steve Boudreau for their solo projects.

Hey Gang! Just back from a 3 week tour (read: PARTY!) across Canada with the Mash Potato Mashers and that was a big bag of fun. Lots of positive feedback from the release of Jeremy Fisher’s “Mint Juleps” album that i produced with him. GO BUY IT! Editing some Slo’ Tom Hits this next week and then we mix it by the end of this month. Looking ahead to some Friends on Friends work and some Super Awesome Club Album tracking.

Hey Team! Shannon Ross album “Jackrabbit” is all done! Did mixed for Said the Whale and Rah Rah this month. Tracking the new SLO’ TOM and the Handsome Devils record in 2 quick sessions (the 1st already done vocals and tambourine next). Thanks to the CBC for playing so much of Joe Brownriggs MODERN WORLD record last week, lots of great support! Final rehearsals for the Mashers canadian tour at the end of June, we’ll be going from Victoria to St.John’s to to take part in many of the Jazz Festivals across the country (along with PARTY club shows along the way). Now Off to Toronto and NXNE with my bro Jeremy Fisher who has been getting great response to the “Mint Juleps” record we made (release July 3rd).

Hey Gang! Jeremy Fisher and i completed his record last month and you can hear a sample at his website jeremyfishermusic.com. Shannon Ross and i finished mixing her record and that will be mastered in mid may. I started work on the music for a kids iPad app “Pip the Penguin”, the first book will soon be released followed by a couple more in the next few months. Mashers Show May 6th at le Petit Chicago in Hull. and the Joe Brownrigg release of MODERN WORLD that i produced last October will be on May 18th and the Police Association. Also upcoming will be a 6 song duet with my friend Andrea Simms-Karp and Also there is a Top Secret song i can’t mention that i played drums for... (shhhhh it’ll be on TV a lot) and ALSo i hope to put up videos of some of my new hits in this month too.

It’s been a been a busy music month and first i want to thank all the humans who made it to Irene’s for a super fun night with my band and the wonderful Andrea Simms-Karp, Party Central! Finished mixing 9 of Shannon Ross’ hits at Bova Sound. Recorded “See for Miles” with Joe Brownrigg, all proceeds from that song will go to CHEO who helped with the care of Joe’s 3 month old nefew Miles who unfortunately passed away at the begining of this month. Started work with my good buddy Jeremy Fisher on what will be his next set of Hits and that process will continue into next month. In the next month I’m very excited to mix Craig Pedersen and Joel Kerr’s Free-Jazz/Country Standards album. I’ll be on CBC radio 2 “the drive” with the Golden Seals March 2nd - you can see video of that on their podcast and youtube.

Just a special note to talk about Joe Brownrigg’s new Album “Modern World”.
This is the fastest turn-around of song to album i’ve been involved with 34 hours from beat 1 to cd text at the mastering. I used minimal mics (1 tlm104 - 2 akg 451’s - 1 D4 and a Mighty G), everything was done in the same room, drums 3-4 feet from vocals and acoustic. few over-dubs (usually to correct tuning problems) then BANG mixed and mastered.

The 15th has me opening solo for the Guilty Minds (i’m gonna rock the loop pedal like i mean it) the 17th there’s a quick Mashers jam on Wellington St. then the mashers play montreal on the 22nd. Recording the last of the Joe Brownrigg hits tomorrow and with that we say goodbye to Boudreau who leaves to join the Broadway Fiddler on the Roof Tour.

Hip Hip Doodle Dip! “Friends on Friends” recording stared last weekend and it’s already sounding astounding! little add-ons here and there, a quick mix, and we’re in business. Next week I play for the Mashed Potato Mashers (new orleans/balkan/klezmer) parade band opening the OIJF on Thursday down Elgin Street, Friday we open for Ukrania’s CD release party at babylon and then Saturday we’re playing out in the Glebe as part of the OIJF. Next month i’m off to Newfoundland to play at their jazz festival.

This Friday I’m playing a wicked Oh Jesus Show at Kafe 1870 in Wakefield Quebec. I’ll be Joined by opener Lefty McRighty (dude who runs the O-Town HoeDown) and behind me will be the Bovaballs. Mid-March Jehan Khoorshed and I will be mixing hits 7,8,& 9 of his new album that’s coming along Amazingly. I’m also Very Excited to be involved in the new (and long awaited) Golden Seals recordings, Dave and I are getting it together and the new disc should be released in this year. A little break in Italy at the end of the month then I’m back to makin’ hits.

oh what fun Phil and i had, it was wicked, go to the Squack! to hear 2 hits. also I wrote a blog for the website Ottawatonite.com about the show i played with phil and phil last week. artwork this weekend, and then it’s off to the races. matt

I’m very happy to announce the launch of this web site and that my new CD “Oh Jesus” is now mixed to completion (master and press within 2 months). I’m very proud of the work I did on Sarah Hallman’s latest release “likely” you can buy it NOW and I recommend that you do! Jehan Khoorshed and I are 3 mixes into his new album (that I’m producing) and it’s sounding very good. I’ll update this from time to time.
